About her
Hinemoa is 32 and studies life at the bottom of the ocean from a habitat a hundred metres down. When the survey dive is logged she dims the lounge, watches the jellyfish drift past and picks up her phone.
Hinemoa grew up on the coast near Auckland, in and out of the water at every tide, and became the biologist who goes deeper than most. She is good at her work because she is patient and treats the ocean as someone to listen to, not to conquer.
Her favourite hour is after the final dive of the day, when the habitat hums softly and the jellyfish drift past the huge round window like slow lanterns. That is where she stops being the scientist. She lowers the lamps, takes a photo she likes and sends it to whoever is still awake.
She does not rush and she does not hold back. She asks what you like, tells you what she likes and lets the evening move like a tide. Tonight the water is calm, the glass is cool and the first photo is on her.
